Why it matters

Spot the families who need special needs planning

Families supporting a child or young person with an EHCP, or a young person who may depend on them for life, face planning risks that are easy to miss. Money left or saved in the child or young person’s own name. Accounts that pass to their control at 18. Wills that don’t reflect their vulnerability. Protection that ends too soon.

These questions can sit inside your fact-find or alongside it. They help you draw out foreseeable harm, and the opportunities to help families plan their future.

What’s Inside?

Four parts, nine questions

PART 1 · QUESTIONS 1–2

The child or young person

EHCPs, SEND assessments and tribunals, and how long the family’s support is likely to be needed.

PART 2 · QUESTIONS 3–5

Money and vulnerability

Who might be vulnerable with money in their own name, what DLA or PIP can signal, and savings held for the young person.

PART 3 · QUESTIONS 6–7

Existing documents

Whether wills across the wider family reflect vulnerability, and who will act as trustee, executor or guardian.

PART 4 · QUESTIONS 8–9

Ahead of transition

Decision-making once the young person turns 18, and whether protection reflects a longer dependency.

Why it matters

Every question explains the planning risk it draws out, so you know why you’re asking it.
